Many of the lines attributed to Ryoma come from later novels and dramas rather than his own hand. Here are a few with real documentary backing, and what they meant in context.
“Let us wash Japan clean, once and for all.”
From a letter to his sister Otome, 1863Written in a letter home rather than as a public statement, this line is one of the more securely documented of Ryoma's famous phrases — a private expression of ambition rather than a speech crafted for an audience, which is part of why historians trust it.
“A man's greatness isn't measured by how many people follow him, but by how many people he can bring together.”
Widely attributed; documentary basis uncertainThis one circulates constantly in business and self-help writing, but no surviving letter or document has been identified as its source — it may be a later paraphrase of Ryoma's reputation as a broker between rival factions, dressed up as a direct quote. Worth knowing before repeating it as verified fact.
