04 — Figures
A castaway who became a diplomat and teacher, a political theorist who translated Rousseau, a botanist who named thousands of species — Tosa's late-Edo energy carried well past the Restoration itself.
1827–1898
Castaway, interpreter, educator
A fisherman's son shipwrecked at 14, rescued by an American whaler, and educated in Massachusetts — he returned to Japan a decade later as one of the few people alive who had actually lived in the United States, and was quickly drafted into shogunate service as an interpreter and shipbuilding instructor.
1847–1901
Political philosopher
Studied in France, translated Rousseau's Social Contract into Japanese, and became known as "the Rousseau of the East" — his writing gave the Freedom and People's Rights Movement much of its philosophical vocabulary.
1862–1957
Botanist
Self-taught, with no university degree, he named or described over 1,500 plant species and built one of Japan's largest personal plant collections — the basis of the 2023 NHK drama Ranman.
